ABOUT

Organizational History

The Society, Incorporated is a non-profit national organization of women dedicated to enhancing, exposing, and promoting youth in the Arts for the betterment of our communities. We are bonded in friendship and service to encourage and support youth who are talented in the Arts. With a focus on under-served children, we provide support for young literary, visual, and performing artists.
Our organization was founded in May 1983 in Washington D.C. by four women ( Celeste Burton, Davetta Madison, Dorothy Patton and Myrtle Roane) who conceived the idea of organizing a group of professional women of color who shared the goals of friendship and service. The outcome of their efforts was the establishment of The Society, Incorporated as an organization to promote friendship among members and serve as a resource in the Arts for young people.
Today we have chapters in 40 cities across the United States providing scholarships, grants, stipends, and other opportunities to help young people experience the exciting dimensions of artistic expression.

Scholarships

The National scholarship program is designed to provide opportunities and support for deserving high school seniors who will enroll in a four-year college, university or accredited institution with a focus on the Arts. National Scholarship awards will be based on artistic and academic merit and will be granted in the areas of visual, performing, and literary Arts. While a demonstration of basic talent is important, other factors such as extra-curricular activities, desired level of involvement in school and community programs, attitude and preparation will be considered. This program is administered by the National Scholarship Committee of The Society, Incorporated.
